Tom called me his D.O.P,
July 23, 2003 2:53 am general chit chatTom called me his D.O.P, now as much as I like the title of Director of Photography, I’m not the D.O.P on this film, I’m just a camera operator, D.O.P’s are responsible for the lighting and planning of each shot they tell the camera operators what to do, they sit down with the director and the production designer and plan the shoot and how to make it look and portray it. I’m not attacking Tom just pointing out that I’m not the D.O.P as much as I want to be. But I tell you what camera operator is a step up from holding the boom and an even bigger step up from being not “aesthetically pleasing” enough to be the boom operator in “will you love me”.
Good on me for studying film and TV production for 2 years. One day I’m gonna make a film and Tom can be a cable runner, except if there is any chance that a ‘making of’ camera will se him and in those instances he will have to leave the set. Oh and if I make a second film tom can be assistant camera operator, except if the shot is important then he will have to go and stand at the back of the set, and face the wall.
you can tell its Tom filming time cause I’m getting all rude towards him.

i actually think, on a really small film, the dop is the camera operator. because on a smaller film, you don’t have lighting, and in toms case you usually don’t have story boards either. but in this instance you do. which is good.
anway, my point is, the smaller the films are, the more manual each of the persons involved have to be. so i think it would be fair to say you were a DOP.

no i agree with some of that but if i was D.O.P i would have had a lot more to do with the shots and stuff, and yeah the D.O.P can ber the camera operator on small shoots, but in this instance i’m gonna be the camera operator. I think Tom wants to do the stedi-cam shots.

I don’t want to do all stedicam shots, just one or two. They look like fun. I’ll let you do most of them.
