What is your view on wearing hats, caps, beanies etc in church?

Personally i think its fine to wear a hat in church, I dont think its disrespectful to God or the people around me. People should be able to come before God in way that is comfortable for them, i guess thats why there are so many denominations and different styles of services and stuff within those denominations.

I reckon beanies are okay but hats aren’t…..how can you see what’s going on if you are wearing a hat. Just my opinion

i guess it’s just my upbringing but i think its disrespectful. not that i go “oooh, he’s wearing a hat, how naughty”. and i know it probably doesn’t really matter. and it’s a double standard if i say it doesn’t matter at all for other things that people argue about in churches (eg. drums or barefeet)… but yes. that’s my opinion.

I was brought up with the rule of hats off indoors (not by tootie though). Maybe that’s why i think they are fine. So long as people behind you can see over them (man thats annoying) and they don’t distract you, in my opinion, theyre dandyfine.

being someone who has worn hats to church on many occasions, its pretty obvious that i don’t think its disrespectful. i mean, women used to have to wear hats. but i don’t necesarily agree with that… but i dont think it matters… i think it matters where your heart is… if you’re wearing hats to annoy others then obviously that’s not right… if you’re wearing a hat cause your hair looks bad then that’s fine… i guess… no i really don’t know… i’ve always been told to take my hat off indoors… but i rarely do… they’re so comfortable… mmm… i don’t think god really minds… but if it bugs others then i (and others) should stop…

I reckon that our conscience (although not perfect) is one of the most important ways we can tell right from wrong. Sometimes we believe something is ok but others aren’t sure if it is ok. When we influence them to do it against their conscience, we can damage their conscience. This is a big problem because they would then find it harder to tell right from wrong in other areas. (see 1 Corinthians 8)

That’s 1 Corinthians chapter eight. Not 1 Corinthians chapter smiley.

    Touching stuff Bowen…

I think this is all tied back to the ‘rules based’ faith that people have been bought up in. Similar to the ‘no drums in church’ debate I think its just a a man made rule that we have attached as a bit of religious baggage to our faith. Only my opinion but I think what’s going on in a persons heart is more important tna whether they are wearing a hat or playing the drums in church.

Our church is actually trying a new service on Sunday nights and last week we served champagne there… only to over 18’s!!! How does that compare with wearing a hat?!

Ideally: hat or no hat; Drum or no drum - we should all be happy with either as long as all of us are heartfelt in what we are doing.

So the way I see it? Wear a hat or beanie, a suit or shorts, dance, raise your arms [or just your hands] or stick em in your pocket - give me a hymn, tell me a story, dance me a jig, share some Greek with me - but in the all you do point me to God - build me up - and most of all allow me to do the same for you - that is the church service I want to come to - a place where I can be me and encourage and be encouraged as I meet with my brothers and sisters in Christ and together we talk with, to and about our great God.

But if someone is going to have such a hard time coping with coming to church with me and my hat on then I will leave the hat home. Though I will try and move them to a point where it doesn’t matter - if all they worry about is my hat I don’t think I am church-ing.

I wish I’d worked that out years ago and not interfered with so many peoples church attending over something so trivial.

i reckon hats were not ok in the old, old days, for some cultural reason - so now it’s probably also about being culturally sensitive -which means sometimes it’s just fine and dandy - other times it might be an issue :) all depends on the context :)

i don’t think God will not listen to you if you wear a hat - but sometimes other people might get distracted perhaps
