I say 6. Because there are 2 grandfathers, their 2 sons and 2 grandsons. Unless they are all different people, in which case you would need 12 chairs. Because there would be 12 people.

Or if some of them were the same people and some weren’t you would need somewhere in between 6 and 12 chairs. Unless some sat on the floor. Or shared. Or the the chairs were benches. And then it would depend how long the benches were.

I say 4. Being a grandfather, a father and a son are not mutually exclusive.

I say 6 as well. And not just because I would agree with the economist…but I added it up…and proud of it!

I’m going with four also. It’s not specified in the question whether these people need to be related to each other, just that we have the right number of grandfathers, fathers and sons

    Person 1 is a grandfather (logically also a father and someone’s son) = G + F + S
    Person 2 is a grandfather (same deal) = G + F + S
    Person 3 is a father (also someone’s son) = F + S
    Person 4 is a father (also someone’s son) = F + S

    Grand total = 2G + 4F + 4S

    The correct answer is 4
The four fathers two of whom could be grandfathers and are definitely sons already

OMG, I can’t believe it. There are so many people to thank,… I’d like to thank the 2 grandfathers, 4 fathers and 4 sons who stood still long enough for me to count and double-count them to win the prize. (I hope it’s a big enough muesli bar to share with 10 people!)
