Dream job – gone

Potential new dream job – gone

Odd

Today I was filling in some time in westie and I decided to go o Kmart and look around the camping stuff.

On leaving Kmart I was stopped by the lady at the door who checks bags, I didn’t have a bag and surely she didn’t think I had a sleeping bag or camping table stuffed down my pants.

She began to quiz me on my thongs, apparently my combination of two pairs of thongs was suspicious, I bet in her Kmart door training she spent a whole day learning how to profile customers based on their thongs.

I explained to her that I bought two pairs at the same time about a year ago, not from Kmart, and that I decided to mix them up as I thought the colours went well with each other.

She gave me one of those fake smiles like Michael Western from burn Notice and I left.

The SS Unemployment

For many many months I have wanted to make Oscar a toy chest, but not just a box, I wanted to make it a cargo ship that the can also push around. 3 or 4 months ago I went and bought some wood from bunnings to help spur the project along, I had no plans, and I still don’t. I’m a make it up as I go kind of guy.

Through the last 4 years I have accumulated a lot of tools, Keith and Stella gave us a toolbox full of tools for our wedding which was probably the second best present we got, only beaten by the case of coke!. I have bought a few power tools and different bits and bobs and then earlier this year I inherited some cool stuff including the folding work bench from jenny’s Grandpa.

I have no training or real skills when it comes to building things, everything I think i know how to do is just from watching my dad as a youngster.

Anyway today i began constructing Oscar’s cargo ship/ toy box.

As I said above I have no set plan or instructions on how to make it, I haven’t seen one before it’s all just from inside my head. I also took the step of not using any form of measuring device like a tape measure. I have found trying to work to millimeters with my dodgy vision just causes me  stress and frustration because either I can’t see the details enough to be accurate or I think it’s accurate but it’s way off.

So this time I decided to use the ‘I think I want it to be about this long’ method. I have to say it made for a very stress free day.

There is still a lot of work to do, like make the pointy bit of the boat at the front.

I only hit myself with the hammer once!!!

church planting, growing weeds or blossoms

The other day Tom blogged about visiting a local church plant that was holding it’s first service. I’m not a big fan of church planting and thought I might share why. This is not a post attacking Tom or wanting to undermine the work of this new church but rather my views on church planting.

I really don’t understand church planting, I don’t understand why or how a church gets to a point where they decide it’s time to grab a bunch of  congregational punters and go and start a new church down the road.

I don’t remember a time where I have been to a church for a normal Sunday service and seen every seat in the building full. If our churches aren’t full why do we need more of them. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to work on filling and improving the churches we already have?

Working with a ‘planting’ analogy  if I was a lemon farmer and my lemon trees weren’t growing to their potential and had fraying leaves I wouldn’t plant more and hope they grow better, I would end up with lots of trees, milking more time and resource to maintain for little harvest. Instead it would be better to keep the few trees and concentrate on the soil to ensure the tree’s have all the nutrients and strong roots that they require to grow better.

Our suburbs in my view are bursting at the seams with churches and more and more are popping up. All it seems to be doing is spreading congregations thinner.

Sure people become Christians but the rate of conversions can’t be equivalent to the rate of church plantings.

This new church has a cool band so lets go there instead of this one, the new church has 2 projector screens!!!!

I feel if a church thinks it’s time to plant a new church, which takes a lot of resource, wouldn’t that resource be best used to widen the programs of that church or help a church that already exists in the local area or partner with a church in a rural area that has little resource of its own, not starting a whole new church.

I’ve also heard recently that church planting is commonly used as one of the measures of positive church growth.

Discuss.

Tomiversary

This coming Thursday will mark 4 years of being officially under thumb to Jenny.

The last 2 anniversaries we celebrated with Tom watching a DVD.

That’s not going to happen this year as it’s our bi-weekly dinner at Jenny’s parents night.

Our 4th anniversary is going to suck.

quiet night out in December

Bono invited me to come and watch him play with his new band, just a little intimate gig in a trendy little Sydney venue.

The pink arrow points to where I’ll be sitting next to my wife.
