I went to Queensland last weekend.
Jenny went to Adelaide and Oscar stayed with inlaws.

I have quite a lot of frequent flyer points with Virgin, well I had a lot of them until I used them all to go to QLD last weekend. I went up and back on Virgin’s new domestic Business class which was pretty fun. It does however mean I now only have 185 points.

I have never ever been upgraded on a flight so it was all new and fun for me, the express check in, the lounge access, fast boarding and comfy seats with good food.

I booked the tickets a while ago and when i booked them they were for premium economy not business class but since booking them virgin got rid of their premium economy on most planes and replaced it with business so my tickets became business.

On the way up I sat in 1F and was called “Mr Howie” a lot.

During the flight I got to finally give my awesome noise cancelling headphones a proper  run. (I bought the headphones using frequent flyer points about 6 months ago)

They were awesome.

And when I got off the plane my bag was the first onto the baggage carousel.

I caught a train straight from the Airport down to the Gold Coast to hang out with my buddy Bowen for a few nights.

We pretty much just sat around eating chicken burgers and chatting, it was great to do nothing and kind of fun to do nothing interstate. Just chill.

Bowen

On the second night with Bowen we walked to 7eleven and I finally got to have a Lemon Lime and Bitters Slurpee, it was damn exciting, so exciting that whilst taking the blury photo I made the whole cup overflow with slurpee goodness and spend a good few minutes licking the outside of my cup before I could walk over to the counter.

Then next morning I trained it back up to Brisvegas and had some lunch, listened to a cool blueegrass / folk band in the mall and then headed for my hotel which was booked using a wotif voucher I got at Christmas.

It was pretty swanky, I was on the 25th floor.

I spent a couple of hours working on outlines for my talks for the camp I’m speaking on next week.
Then I put my boardies on and went down to the pool, but on arrival at the pool I noticed that no one was in the water but there was heaps of very brown older people laying on lounges around it. So I went back to my room and had a nap.

I thought maybe because I was sooo hot and was too pansy to show off my super white skin in the pool area that I would have a shower.
It was one of those showers that just has one tap for both hot and cold and you turn it to either side to adjust the temp.

I turned the water on in the position it was already in (which was extremely hot) and then when I went to turn it down the tap came off in my hand.

It took me a long time to get it back on because I had to put my hand through the boiling water and be able to hold it there long enough to reattach the tap.

But thanks to my mad skillz, I did it eventually.

I also got to have dinner with my buddy Jesse, he took me to a pancake place in an old church. It was pretty good food.

J-Dog

After Jesse left and I had a phone conversation with the wife I went for a long walk across to south bank and around the city.

there was drunk people swimming, couples kissing and lots of pretty lights. I had a good time until i had the poo urge and realised how fricken far it was back to the hotel. And as you are a probably aware I can’t drop a load just any old toilet.

It was a brisk walk back to say the least.

The next morning I checked out, trained it back to the Airport then flew home. This time in 1A.

The business class flights and Hotel total was $47, a pretty good holiday for $47.

Well PLUS THE $91.30 FOR THE BLOODY AIRPORT TRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The little ‘holiday’ that Oscar and I went on is well and truly over.

We left on Sunday afternoon and Jenny came and picked us up on Wednesday around 10am.

But what happened in between? If you are friends with me on Facebook you may have noticed an album full of photos form our little getaway, if you are not firneds with me on Facebook it’s probably because I deleted you. I deleted over 200 ‘friends’ a couple of weeks ago.

On Monday morning after waking up at the normal 7am Oscar had his wheatbix and cup of milk and I had a musli bar.

the view from our pad

Then there was the routine childnres tv shows to watch before we began our journey to Luna Park.

Our apartment was in Pyrmont behind the convention centre so we had to get ourselves to the king street wharf which is quite a long walk for a 2 year old so we made use of the Monorail which Oscar was pretty excited about, well he was excited watching it come in to the station but once we where on it he spent the whole trip saying “daddy are we on the monorail now?”

We waited for the ferry then cruised across to Luna Park. It was a quick ish ferry ride.

We arrived at Luna Park about half an hour before they opened which was very frustrating for Oscar as he wanted to go on the little cars ‘nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww’. I convinced him to fill in the time by eating which he was happy to do.

Oscar has big boobs

We have well and truly got value for money with a Luna Park annual pass that Oscar gave me for fathers day last year! He loves it there and there is a big enough selection of rides for little kids that keeps him well entertained.

It was a bit of a ghost town on Monday though first we went on the dodgem cars together but there was no other people so it was just the two of us in one car going round and round, Oscar thought it was hilarious though and we bumped in to the wall lots to make it more fun.

Eventually school kids arrived which made the day less fun. But thankfully there all too fat to go the little kiddy rides.

After Luna park we headed back to our place using the ferry and light rail.

I cooked Oscar sausages for dinner which he always loves and we had another rough night with him waking and coughing lots.

Tuesday was massive.

We headed off for the Zoo bright an early taking 2 ferries to get there. We also have had zoo annual passes for the last yearish so another value for money destination. One of Oscar’s favorite things at the zoo is the cable car but the cable car was broken so we caught a bus up to the top instead.

Oscar had a great time, the zoo is the kind of place where he can wander off not having to hold my hand or be close to the pram, so he did lots of exploring and he really loves the freedom but also loves to stop and check that he can still see me and me him, which is not always the case, one day he will understand that just becasue he can see daddy doesnt mean I can see him.

Tassie Devil 'Road Kill' exhibit

This time Oscar’s favourite animals where the possums and the meerkats. I got myself the worlds most expensive chicken burger meal for lunch and whipped out some cruskits for oscar and smeared peanut butter on them. Luckily I had a whole jar in my backpack!

Oscar decided to have a big tanty just near the bottom exit which meant we missed a ferry by less than one minute which I didn’t enjoy as we now had to sit on the wharf for 30 minutes.

Eventually the ferry came and Oscar spent most of the trip with his head out the window shouting ‘boy’ at some kid outside.

We then headed for sydney tower which Oscar loved. But it also meant he spotted the darling harbour Ferris wheel which I thought was finally out of his mind. He managed to spot this thing several times the day before and on the drive in on Sunday.

Anyway up the tower he asked again if we could go on it so I decided to say yes because it was a holiday and he asked very nicely and apart from the zoo tanty had been a pretty good boy. So transported to Darling Harbour and went to the Ferris wheel where a carnie family with 4 teeth between them informed me of the price. It was $8 for one, and I thought that was expensive but not too outrageous, until she said that the kid is counted as one too. WHO THE HELL CHARGES A 2 YEAR OLD $8 FOR A FRIGGEN FERRIS WHEEL. He is free for the zoo, free to go up sydney tower but this was going to cost $16!!!!! I hope they spent my money on dental work!

After the ferris wheel we pottered around darling harbor then headed back for our last night in our pad.

On Wednesday morning I packed and cleaned the place before we left. I had to take a large suitcase, pram, porta-cot, 2 backpacks, shopping bag and a 2 year old down to the lobby then down a flight of stairs to the street to wait for Jenny.

leaving time

I was sweating and flustered once everything was on the footpath. I almost lost Oscar when the lift opened on the wrong floor.

We sat on the footpath waiting for jenny, then about 5 minutes before Jenny was going to arrive Oscar said the words I hate the most when I’m not somewhere familiar and easy. ‘Daddy I need to do a poo poo”. So I carried everything back up the steps and took oscar to the toilet where he said my second most hated phrase “oh no poo poo”. Then jenny rang to say she was out the front so back down the stairs I went with all our stuffs.

Thankfully we made it home easily and Oscar and I both had a big long nap that afternoon.

I’m ready to have another father son trip when he’s 18.

To give Jenny a bit of a break Oscar and I are on a little holiday. The original plan was to go on a plane somewhere but that was working out way too expensive so instead we are just 25kms away in the city.

We are only away 3 nights but we seem to have more luggage than lady gaga. Jenny drove us into Pyrmont to where we are staying. This place is huge and there was about 30 people before us in the check in line. So I maneuvered our pram, suitcase, portacot and2 backpacks into the line with us for the long wait. It took ages to get to the front and the whole time Oscar wanted to be held. When we did get to the very front f the line Oscar said “Daddy I need to do a wee wee” so. Had to bail and go in search of the toilets.

After doing the biggest wee in the history of weeing we went back to the foyer and lined up again, thankfully the line was much shorter this time.

We loitered about in the apartment for a while before riding the monorail around the loop and heading to Coles to stock our kitchen.

We came back, are dinner, bathed the boy and put him to bed. Then I spent the evening wasting my life away with foxtel. I watched a docco about how umbrellas are made, it was dull.

20110815-080140.jpg

At 3am Oscar awoke and called out to me, normally he just wants a quick hug and a sip of water. Not tonight!!!!! For the first time ever since Oscar was born he stayed awake for 2 and a half hours!!!! Coughing, calling out to me, crying, sipping water, hugging, calling out to me, coughing, crying …….. It was pretty painful I was exhausted. So at 5:30 he and me went off to sleep. At 7am he was up and ready for the day.

I have never spent new years eve in Armidale before and I have to say I thought it would be pretty crap in terms of fireworks.

But I was mistaken, Armidale has super fireworks and what makes them super is that they are let off by a priest who also happens to have a pyrotechnics license. The council a local pub and others contribute to the cost. The playing fields are roped off and Father Anthony let’s it rip at 9pm and midnight. He has to be the coolest priests ever. There was a lot of fireworks, infact. they went off for 10 minutes straight, all different types. I love fireworks and being soo close to them being launched was really cool.

Father Anthony calls himself ‘Holy Smoke’ what a super dooper Priest!!!

In other news I had a fiddle with my parents label-er today and made a special label for them.

Some mornings since being over here we have put on the kids channel for Oscar to watch.

In between shows there is a man in a yellow shirt, At the start of our trip Oscar would say “no no no no” when the man came on. But now he just wants the man and not the actual shows. I can’t stand the man.

See if you last hte 5 mins.

I’m really enjoying Queenstown. I have been here before but it was back in 1998, me and Dad travelled around NZ for a few weeks only using public transport and sharing rooms with nude Germans in youth hostels.

12 years later and I’m back.

We have had a lot of fun here and Oscar has been a happy chapy (mostly). We went up the skyline gondola the afternoon we got here and inquired at the desk if we could take Oscar on the luge. The lady said yeah he’s fine just need to go down with one of us. So the first run he sat in between my legs and we whooshed down the hill in a little cart on the concrete track. Oscar LOVED it, he was saying a lot of ‘Woweeee’ and even more excited when we went through the two tunnels ‘nunnels’.

We later found on their website there is a minimum age limit of 3.  Don’t tell our almost 2 year old, he loved it too much. Infact we took him back up today for more!

We also did the shotover jet, but he was definitely too little for that so we tag teamed that one.

Today I went on a Ziptrek eco tour. Which was 4 big flying foxes on the side of a mountain going through a Forrest.  It was pretty awesome although the loud Americans singing Disney tunes in my group sure did get annoying. Why are Americans soo looud!

On the second ‘zip line’ I even hung upside down, It didn’t make for good scenery viewing but it did relieve the pressure on my berries from the harness.

Tomorrow I hope to have a super duper afternoon nap.

Here is some pics from our apartment. I haven’t taken photos of everything we do as I feel that is well covered by the online media department that I travel with.

Today we went on a train adventure on the Taieri Gorge Railway. It was pretty cool.

A 4 hour journey from Dunedin station (New Zealand’s most photographed building which I refused to photograph).

taieri1.jpg

It winds it way through tunnels and over rickety old bridges and around cliff edges propped up with rusty old used train tracks.

taieri2.jpg

Oscar was very excited to reach the half way point so he could run around on the grass, he has a new obsession with grass.

taieri3.jpg

I love a good train trip but a train trip that also provides my immature mind with amusement takes this train trip to a whole new level.

We finished up our time in Christchurch yesterday morning and left our awesome house for a town called Timaru, If you come to NZ avoid it!.

We arrived in Timaru around lunchtime but almost all the shops were shut, we walked up and down streets for ages untol we found an overpriced cafe that would sell us some food. I got a burger and asked for no beetroot, it came and had 5 pieces of beetroot on it.

Then our accommodation was dingy and had no internet.

Today we drove to Dunedin, it is much nicer. We found food easily, we drove up and down the world’s steepest street and we purchased the most important item one can purchase on a holiday.

After last nights disaster of no internet, and the realisation that internet in our Dunedin place would cost us $20 a day I went and got me a vodafone internet stick thingy.

lifesaver.jpg

I love it, it also means I can just share my internet through macs lovely airport so jenny has it too.

tomorrow we are going on a train trip into the Taieri Gorge, hope to get some super photos and a choice fridge magnet!

I love New Zeeland!

When you drive around NSW there are generally two things that every country town has, they have an antique shop tea rooms and a Rivers factory outlet store. And the oldies love it!!!! If you look  at old people walking around they all look the same, that’s because all of them shop at rivers whenever they go on a little holiday.

Well Christchurch just seems to be one giant factory outlet city. Today I picked up some new jeans, beanie and some bright green skate shoes  all from a factory outlet store that was 60 – 70% off everything! The difference between Christchurch and rural NSW is that the factory outlet stores here don’t just sell 3/4 length grey pants and rugby jerseys.

Today we also did the tourist thing and went on the Gondola up a hill. It was choice.

Today I turned off the infamouse water jet in the shower so was able to have a more adventurous day.

Walking around westfield and walking up some muddy hill. I don’t want to bore you with every details of what we did, there is jenny’s blog for that.

What I will show you is a building that makes me smile each time we go past, I’m pretty mature. You will also notice the earthquake affected building next door there are heaps of buildings like this across the place.

After this mornings shower experience plans for the day where thrown out the window. It was instead turned into a rest and recuperation day.

A slow walk around some markets, a lie down and a trip to a museum. After a shower like that, ice packs would have probably been prescribed by a medical professional, luckily the wind chill in Christchurch has had a similar soothing effect.

NZ is famous all over the world for it’s extreme sports. Bungy jumping, mispronouncing ‘i’, jet boating, hele skiing and others.

Well there is a new extreme sport on the scene here that I’m going to have a go at. It is extreme showering.

This is the shower in our Christchurch place, you will notice it has the standard ‘head height’ water outlet, you will then notice it has 2 more water outlets. One at stomach height and one at bits and pieces height.

jetshower.jpg

I’m not really sure I want to be blasted in the equipment with hot water, but I’ll give it a go. I’m hoping it’s tender and not some kind of turbo bidet.

Written on October 9th, 2010 , [Live] from NZ

This morning I woke up early, had some loose and unformed stool and headed to the airport with wife and son.

We got on a plane that flew to Christchurch.

On the plan I got to watch bits of Toy story 3, bob the builder and Thomas & Friends, all with no sound.

I had steak for lunch with vegies including almost crunchy potato, it was one of the best tasting plane meals I have ever had.

In Christchurch I went to Pak n’ Save and pushed around a trundler.

I’m having frozen pizza for dinner, although I will heat it before eating.

tomorrow I’m going to dig a hole, put a pig in it and have a hungi
