After almost 12 months in the Apple recruitment process and it ending with me not getting a job I was still excited about the Hornsby Apple Store opening today.

During the past year I had 5 interviews and months of waiting in between to finally be told I was not going to get a job but that I could apply again in a few months if I wanted to. I didn’t want to.

Hornsby Store the day before opening

Anyway the hornsby store opened at 10am this morning, I knew it would be busy and dumb to go at 10 and also as a protest to them not employing me I waited until 11am. It was super busy when we walked past and security had set up barricades to control the long line of people waiting to get into the store. The first 1000 people in to the store get a free apple shirt.

I am not kidding when I tell you that I was the 1001th person to enter the store.

Bloody Apple, I love your products but you sure don’t love me.

Me – ‘Hey Oscar is mummy the best mummy?’

Oscar  – ‘Yes and I’m the best Oscar’

Jenny – ‘Is daddy the best daddy?’

Oscar – *silence

Jenny – ‘Who is the best daddy?’

Oscar – ‘no one.’

Yesterday I did some things.

We are supposed to take our turtles out in the real sunlight a few times a week, they have UV lights above their tank but real sun is better. We are pretty slack at doing it becasue it’s a bit of effort and the little buggers are really fast so we can’t just let them roam the front yard.

They used to have a nice little set up but they worked out how to climb over the fence.

So I decided to build something a little more substantial.

I’m not a perfectionist when it comes to handyman stuff, which is good because I’m not very good at it. I kind of just make it all up as I go and try to avoid using things like tape measures and accuracy. This time the end result is not too shabby.

Although I did manage to squeeze my finger in some pliers resulting in a massive blood blister which a few minutes later I accidentally ripped open with a screwdriver.

It really hurt, and still does.

Plus I have blood all over one of my screwdrivers.

Anyway eventually I finished it.

One of the other things I did yesterday was use a camp solar shower. Our hot water is heated by a natural gas ‘instant hot water’ system which is quite energy efficient, but it still does require the burning of the gas. I got a solar camp shower the other day for a ridiculously cheap price so wanted to test it out. I filled the bag with water, left it in the sun for a few hours then took it inside for a shower.

The water was warm, the flow was quite weak but I was able to have a shower and clean myself. I’m not planning on using it every day but I reckon in summer it won’t be hard to use it at all and I can shower happily knowing I’m using much less water and no dodgy fuel.

I’m pretty much captain planet.

Today the turtles used their new outdoor digs, I’m pretty sure they liked it although they never talk to me anymore.

Today marks 5 years of marriage to my favourite wife.

When we were first married we often used to say to each other how being married wasn’t all that different to being best buddies onnly now Jenny didn’t have to drop me home at the end of each day. Thankfully that is still the case, we have no desire to live in separate houses.

Being married is pretty fun, and I think we do an allright job at it. We laugh a lot, we don’t really fight. Well he have disagreements and sometimes our rage at each other gets soo intense that it can be up  to 30 seconds after something angry making has happened for one of us to offer the other one a drink or make some witty comment.

I guess everyone does conflict differently we aren’t very good at it and don’t really want to learn.

Most of all we are buddies, we enjoy hanging out just as much as we did in the flirting days. Simple things make us happy like jenny bringing me home a bottle of coke or me remembering to bring the washing in. (both of these are rare occurrences, which is why they are so special when they do happen).

Jenny I love you and stuff.

5th Anniversary’s are ‘wood’ . you know like how others are paper, and gold and stuff. I’m not sure when the itunes one is but I’m excited about that one when it comes.

To fit with the wooden theme I made Jenny a little gift.

I got a bit of wood from under the house (thanks Keith). Carved out a little bit, got a plaque made, stained the wood and stuck the plaque in the hole I made.

’5 YEARS
Wooden have it any other way’

She better like it because I hurt my finger pretty bad making the damn thing. Not in a masculine way like ripping off a fingernail with a chisel or something. No I hurt it by getting it jammed in a hinge on my folding work bench when setting it up.

So I just discovered I’m a YouTube hit.

This Friday marks Jenny and my 5th wedding anniversary, so I was scrolling through old blog posts and found a link to a YouTube video of the kiss at our wedding. It was taken by our buddy Sam on his phone and uploaded to the interwebs. It seems that in the last 5 years there has been a lot of people watching this video expecting to find Howie D of the backstreet boys kissing his wife.

In fact 70,888 people have watched it.

Enjoy.

So another year of AFL tipping draws to a close, and in the little league with some buddies I finished on top.

this last round was tense, I thought Grant had me, but I managed to get 6 tips right this week compared with his 5.

Overall there are 171,025 people who are part of the tipping competition and I finished ranked 2,638

not too shabby.

Today from the moment Oscar woke up to the moment we left his room at bed time we clicked every time he said ‘why’. He says it a lot so I thought it would be fun to see how many.

The result.

The little ‘holiday’ that Oscar and I went on is well and truly over.

We left on Sunday afternoon and Jenny came and picked us up on Wednesday around 10am.

But what happened in between? If you are friends with me on Facebook you may have noticed an album full of photos form our little getaway, if you are not firneds with me on Facebook it’s probably because I deleted you. I deleted over 200 ‘friends’ a couple of weeks ago.

On Monday morning after waking up at the normal 7am Oscar had his wheatbix and cup of milk and I had a musli bar.

the view from our pad

Then there was the routine childnres tv shows to watch before we began our journey to Luna Park.

Our apartment was in Pyrmont behind the convention centre so we had to get ourselves to the king street wharf which is quite a long walk for a 2 year old so we made use of the Monorail which Oscar was pretty excited about, well he was excited watching it come in to the station but once we where on it he spent the whole trip saying “daddy are we on the monorail now?”

We waited for the ferry then cruised across to Luna Park. It was a quick ish ferry ride.

We arrived at Luna Park about half an hour before they opened which was very frustrating for Oscar as he wanted to go on the little cars ‘nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww’. I convinced him to fill in the time by eating which he was happy to do.

Oscar has big boobs

We have well and truly got value for money with a Luna Park annual pass that Oscar gave me for fathers day last year! He loves it there and there is a big enough selection of rides for little kids that keeps him well entertained.

It was a bit of a ghost town on Monday though first we went on the dodgem cars together but there was no other people so it was just the two of us in one car going round and round, Oscar thought it was hilarious though and we bumped in to the wall lots to make it more fun.

Eventually school kids arrived which made the day less fun. But thankfully there all too fat to go the little kiddy rides.

After Luna park we headed back to our place using the ferry and light rail.

I cooked Oscar sausages for dinner which he always loves and we had another rough night with him waking and coughing lots.

Tuesday was massive.

We headed off for the Zoo bright an early taking 2 ferries to get there. We also have had zoo annual passes for the last yearish so another value for money destination. One of Oscar’s favorite things at the zoo is the cable car but the cable car was broken so we caught a bus up to the top instead.

Oscar had a great time, the zoo is the kind of place where he can wander off not having to hold my hand or be close to the pram, so he did lots of exploring and he really loves the freedom but also loves to stop and check that he can still see me and me him, which is not always the case, one day he will understand that just becasue he can see daddy doesnt mean I can see him.

Tassie Devil 'Road Kill' exhibit

This time Oscar’s favourite animals where the possums and the meerkats. I got myself the worlds most expensive chicken burger meal for lunch and whipped out some cruskits for oscar and smeared peanut butter on them. Luckily I had a whole jar in my backpack!

Oscar decided to have a big tanty just near the bottom exit which meant we missed a ferry by less than one minute which I didn’t enjoy as we now had to sit on the wharf for 30 minutes.

Eventually the ferry came and Oscar spent most of the trip with his head out the window shouting ‘boy’ at some kid outside.

We then headed for sydney tower which Oscar loved. But it also meant he spotted the darling harbour Ferris wheel which I thought was finally out of his mind. He managed to spot this thing several times the day before and on the drive in on Sunday.

Anyway up the tower he asked again if we could go on it so I decided to say yes because it was a holiday and he asked very nicely and apart from the zoo tanty had been a pretty good boy. So transported to Darling Harbour and went to the Ferris wheel where a carnie family with 4 teeth between them informed me of the price. It was $8 for one, and I thought that was expensive but not too outrageous, until she said that the kid is counted as one too. WHO THE HELL CHARGES A 2 YEAR OLD $8 FOR A FRIGGEN FERRIS WHEEL. He is free for the zoo, free to go up sydney tower but this was going to cost $16!!!!! I hope they spent my money on dental work!

After the ferris wheel we pottered around darling harbor then headed back for our last night in our pad.

On Wednesday morning I packed and cleaned the place before we left. I had to take a large suitcase, pram, porta-cot, 2 backpacks, shopping bag and a 2 year old down to the lobby then down a flight of stairs to the street to wait for Jenny.

leaving time

I was sweating and flustered once everything was on the footpath. I almost lost Oscar when the lift opened on the wrong floor.

We sat on the footpath waiting for jenny, then about 5 minutes before Jenny was going to arrive Oscar said the words I hate the most when I’m not somewhere familiar and easy. ‘Daddy I need to do a poo poo”. So I carried everything back up the steps and took oscar to the toilet where he said my second most hated phrase “oh no poo poo”. Then jenny rang to say she was out the front so back down the stairs I went with all our stuffs.

Thankfully we made it home easily and Oscar and I both had a big long nap that afternoon.

I’m ready to have another father son trip when he’s 18.

To give Jenny a bit of a break Oscar and I are on a little holiday. The original plan was to go on a plane somewhere but that was working out way too expensive so instead we are just 25kms away in the city.

We are only away 3 nights but we seem to have more luggage than lady gaga. Jenny drove us into Pyrmont to where we are staying. This place is huge and there was about 30 people before us in the check in line. So I maneuvered our pram, suitcase, portacot and2 backpacks into the line with us for the long wait. It took ages to get to the front and the whole time Oscar wanted to be held. When we did get to the very front f the line Oscar said “Daddy I need to do a wee wee” so. Had to bail and go in search of the toilets.

After doing the biggest wee in the history of weeing we went back to the foyer and lined up again, thankfully the line was much shorter this time.

We loitered about in the apartment for a while before riding the monorail around the loop and heading to Coles to stock our kitchen.

We came back, are dinner, bathed the boy and put him to bed. Then I spent the evening wasting my life away with foxtel. I watched a docco about how umbrellas are made, it was dull.

20110815-080140.jpg

At 3am Oscar awoke and called out to me, normally he just wants a quick hug and a sip of water. Not tonight!!!!! For the first time ever since Oscar was born he stayed awake for 2 and a half hours!!!! Coughing, calling out to me, crying, sipping water, hugging, calling out to me, coughing, crying …….. It was pretty painful I was exhausted. So at 5:30 he and me went off to sleep. At 7am he was up and ready for the day.

We have new toilet paper at home and it’s made from recycled office documents.

I can only assume it came from Bear Grylls office because it is rougher than a tropical rash.

What do you use to make yourself feel tough?

Oscar was sitting in the front room reading a big fairy tales book. I went in and asked him what the book was about, to which he replied ‘this book about Jesus’

This could mean one of two things:

1. He thinks Jesus is a fictional children’s book character.
2. He is ready to go to Sunday school because ‘Jesus’ is always the answer to any question.

Well the Tour is over, I don’t even know why I love it so much but every year it hooks me in and I love it.

While Cadel did an amazing job and is the first Aussie to win, we can’t celebrate too much as Jenny beat me in the fantasy tour. There are rumors going around that she cheated and took performance enhancing drugs. I’m trying to get to the bottom of it to ensure that if she did cheat I can take my place on the top of the podium but she is being shifty and refusing to wee into one of our cups for testing.
